In the western part of the Rhodope Mountains, nestled in the valley of the Chepinska River, is the town of Velingrad, famous for its many mineral springs. Velingrad got the prize "SPA capital of the Balkans" thanks to the many first-class hotels that use the healing properties of the mineral water springing from the bowels of the mountain, so that every guest of the city has the opportunity to enjoy this healing pleasure, and not only .

It is believed that Orpheus once lived on these lands. There is also evidence that the region was inhabited by Thracian tribes in the VI - V century BC. This is evidenced by the remaining grave mounds and fortresses from that time. Afterwards, this area was conquered by the Romans, which is also evidenced by archaeological findings

The Location

Velingrad is located 135 km from the capital Sofia and 81 km from the second largest city in Bulgaria – Plovdiv.You can reach the city by car or by the narrow-gauge train from Septemvri to Dobrinishte

The 24th meridian and the 42nd parallel intersect near the town of Velingrad, southeast of the "Kleptuza" locality outside the city. Such intersections are rare, and the combination of numbers makes it even more interesting

The most significant cultural-historical, archaeological and natural attractions of Bulgaria are located nearby. Velingrad is also known for the largest karst spring in Bulgaria - "Kleptuza". It has a flow rate of 600 to 1200 l/s, feeds two artificial lakes, and next to it is a designated recreation area with water bikes. The Cepina fortress is a cultural monument of national importance

EAT & DRINK

In Velingrad you can try the extremely delicious Rhodope specialties. Since ancient times, the people of Rhodope have been famous as hospitable people. Each guest is invited to try: the "Patatnik" and the "Rhodope's Klin", which you can combine with ayran or yogurt. And if you are thirsty, you must ask the locals for a "lyuto".
